Evanescence Live in Detroit

The State Theater was jammed to capacity. The show had sold out as soon as tickets went on sale. I found myself fortunate to obtain a ticket to this show.

As the fans lined up alongside the State Theater, Amy Lee poked her head out of a window from her dressing room, to be greeted with wild cheers and screams from fans.

The opening act, Revelation Theory set the tone for the evening. They quickly won the crowd over. The new found-fans quickly made their way to concession stands to purchase their new album.

As soon as the lights went down for Evanescence, the crowd screamed and went wild. Amy Lee commanded the stage, wearing a black tank top and a plaid scarved skirt. She sang the songs with conviction and dynamic range. Amy was clearly overwhelmed with the outpouring of affection from the audience and profusely thanked them, several times over.

The songs that made the crowd go wild were a few off the new album, The Open Door, such as, "Call Me When You're Sober". The set list was sprinkled with songs from the first album, Fallen, such as "Going Under" and "Haunting".

The stage lights were dimmed as a grand piano was brought out and Amy sang "Lithium". She was completely in control and delivered an astonishing performance. Then, she delved into the hit, "Bring Me to Life", as the audience sang along with her, holding lighters aloft. The final song of the set was "Lacrymosa".

For the two-song encore, the grand piano was brouht out again and Amy reappeared, ready to deliver nothing less than her finest. To the opening piano chords of "My Immortal", the audience sang along and a hush fell over the crowd until the band kicked in. Then, everyone sang as though they felt the music inside of them.

The final encore song was, "All That I'm Living For".  All in all, it was a well-orchestrated, moving show. The dark, moody, evocativce music made this show one to remember.
