Interviews

(hed) P.E. (hed P.E.)

I was very excited to cover this show, as I had seen the band in 1999 at Ozzfest. I had also just received the new CD Blackout in the mail about a week prior to the show, and had been rocking out to it ever since. I mean, I had this disc in my alarm clock to wake up to, I had two of the tracks, "Suck It Up" and "Blackout," in my portable MP3 player to rock my workouts and mountain bike rides. I also listened to the disc in my regular stereo every chance I got. In other words, I was primed and stoked!

A.M. Daughter (AM Daughter)
Daughters are a screaming juggernaut of sex and violence from Providence, RI, whose most recent album, Canada Songs (Robotic Empire) is a 12-minute cacophony more akin to a vengeful heart attack drunk driving on the Autobahn than any music currently filling the spectrum of sound today.

Allan, Mitch (Mitch Allan) of SR71
Songs like "What A Mess", "Alive" and "Right Now" had me giddily anticipating SR-71's new album Tomorrow . Immediately struck by its growth and guitar-oriented rock edge, I was ecstatic to be covering SR-71's live show, even finding time to introduce myself to the band.

Benner, Chris (Chris Benner) of Digger
After releasing their brilliant fourth full-length, Keystone, in October and touring the US, Digger trekked through the UK and Europe during November and December. Answering my questions via e-mail, lead singer/guitarist Chris Benner enlightens us on the new record and recounts some of the memorable moments from both tours, which includes everything from his first taste of absinthe (which just so happens to be prohibited in the US, France, and Canada!) and playing for "shifty eyed" drunk and disorderly Europeans to hanging with fellow label-mates Mustard Plug - and - living to tell the tale.

Bowling for Soup
Bowling For Soup. What can I say about Bowling For Soup? Like the class clown who makes himself the butt of the joke, Bowling For Soup have made it their formula to write fun, catchy, hilarious songs that poke fun at themselves and the world via their lyrics and over-the-top videos. But behind it all is great songwriting and a love for what they do.

Bunton, Jacob (Jacob Bunton) and Dee Dee of Lynam
Jacob and I had a hell of a time hooking up this interview. The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak, so they say - or in our case, the cell phone batteries suck. First I called Jacob's cell phone but when it produced its tell-tale impending death beeps, I had to hang up and call David's. Soon enough, it went dead too so I frantically started dialing every number I had, finally reaching Jacob where he sweetly drolled, "Let me call you back on yet another phone", which he did and we were able to finish our conversation. In the process, I gleened more information from those guys than their ex-girlfriends are privy to, and I developed an incredible yearing to visit Alabama.

Buzz King
If music is viable, it’s going to stand the faithful time test. And if it’s catchy, it may travel across the water to play a game of hooksy with a few humble Europeans. In this case, the Buzz King’s have slowly released their humorous perspective on life’s novelties in an album called I’m Truly Sorry, where they have indeed traveled the UK scene to form a world wide following.

Cooke, Warren (Warren Cook) of Digger
With an extremely supportive wife and a three-month-old son at home in Jacksonville, FL and upon parting ways with his good friends in Yellowcard, bassist Warren Cooke seems to have things "back on track" obtaining a position with pop-punk stalwarts - and all around nice guys - Digger over the summer and finally getting back out on the road. In fact, while we were chatting on the phone one night in September, he and his band mates were actually busy preparing for their tour for which they were leaving the very next day.

Dictor, Dave (Dave Dictor) MDC
Forming in Texas in 1980, hardcore punk giants MDC have been a mainstay in the scene for quite some time now, putting out highly political-charged records that are not for the faint-hearted. In fact, it's safe to say these guys are THE most visceral, outspoken band EVER. MDC have released material under a slew of names including Millions of Damn Christians and Multi-Death Corporation, but are most well known as Millions of Dead Cops. Yeah, they're not afraid to question the status quo or provoke anyone in any way they can.

Emerson, Chris (Chris Emerson)

Chris Emerson, an up and coming artist out of Boston has already had some success with his first single of his debut album, Tourist. "All Because of You" was featured on an episode of the WB's television show "Dawson's Creek," went to #22 on the Billboard Chart and can now be found on the Dawson's Creek Soundtrack Volume 3. His second single, "Broken Heart" has just been released in the beginning of 2003, and has already made its way onto nationwide adult contemporary and Top 40 radio stations. Chris Emerson is a talented musician who has been making music one way or another all his life, and his debut CD left such an impression on me that I wanted to get to know him better, and get him known better as well.

Floyd, Ken (Ken Floyd) Eighteen Visions
Eighteen Visions is an up-and-coming metalcore band out of Orange Co., California. Having ads in Alternative Press and Revolver magazines, clothing endorsement deals, and touring with Mushroomhead (as well as with Kittie), these guys show that when it comes to metal, they're more than just another pretty face. They have a new release on Trustkill Records titled Vanity, so we sent off some questions, and drummer Ken Floyd replied, albiet as succintly as possible. We'll forgive him, since there were a lot of questions, and he did sign the e-mail "love ken." Here's what he had to say:

Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Speaking with the flamboyant Karen O., singer/yelper of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, known for her zany onstage antics and exquisitely creative fashion sense that is every bit as important to the band as the unique art-punk they are known for, I wasn't sure what to expect. But the charming frontwoman, who actually describes herself as "shy," was a pleasure to talk to even though we were only allotted about fifteen minutes or so to converse.

Last Call Brawl
Long Island may suck, but at least we've got some cool bands, some of which luckily feature humorous, slightly "off" people. Take, for instance, West Islip-based four-piece Last Call Brawl. On the eve of playing some of the biggest shows of their early career, which occured late-October/mid-November (one with the UK's finest, UK Subs, as well as NYC heartthrobs The Shemps and The Krays, and another with the freakin' Misfits for godsakes, Agent Orange, and Nihilistics), we met at - where else - a bar to discuss what they've accomplished so far and what's still to come.

Lee, Tommy (Tommy Lee)
"What was he like?," I was left to simply respond, "Nice". Nothing like the hype or what the media would have you believe, Tommy was laidback, answering fan's e-mails as we chatted about his bandmates, Never A Dull Moment, and what it's like to be....Tommy Lee.

Leonardy, Mick (Mick Leonardy) of Divit
Having failed to reach Mick Leonardy at the time agreed upon, 1pm PT, I was quite surprised to get a call from the Divit front man at around 8:30pm ET the same day, asking if we could talk while the band was on the road headed for a show later that night in L.A. The next complication came as he revealed he suffers from A.D.D., the reason, I assume, our conversation veered into obscurity at times, as I often found myself dodging some of his own personal questions. But in any case, I was able to get a lot out of this 24-year old Californian, who seemingly would have much to say about any topic. However, here, Mick expounds on what it was like to play Warped Tour last summer - a highlight was, of course, being fed three times a day, as well as what the band's plans are for the rest of 2003, what their new material sounds like, and among other things, how he feels about the whole downloading debacle - railing against Lars from Metallica in the process and enlisting help from guitarist Rich Brinkerhoff who shared some of his "profound" insight on the subject.

Less Than Jake - Chris

At this year's Warped stop in Milwaukee, WI, I had a surprise chance to sit down for a few minutes with the singer of Less Than Jake, Chris (they don't go with last names). I asked him a few questions about the band and Warped, and he candidly played along.

Lilley, Jason (Jason Lilley) of Drill 187
A driving band with a sound that begs to be signed, North Carolina's Drill 187 are this close to that goal! Currently drawing the attention of major labels, as well as top managers and promotions companies, the band are living a dream. One need only listen to the band's first full-length disc, The Faceless Majority, to realize that they are, in fact, very serious about what they do.

Spawned from some surrounding areas of L.A. (Lincoln Heights and Cypress Park) eight years ago this March, Los Creepers are a strange breed. Mixing everything from punk to psychobilly, surf, and rock 'n' roll, their sound is something that can only be grasped when heard for yourself.

Maler, Jimmy (Jimmy Maler) of Dizzy Park
I met Jimmy during a cacophonous psycho-billy performance by Hellvis at one of his clubs where I was instantly struck by his Johnny Rzeznick ‘do and congenial smile. As is the case with yours truly, I imbibed far too much alcohol and tripped over a drum case, but still walked out with a copy of Dizzy Park's second album, Stranger Than Friction.

Linze Marie, hailing from Ohio, is taking the Midwest by storm. Her single "Insanity" is taking the radio stations left and right. While not your typical singer, Linze prefers the "dark side" of music. Her stage prescence leaves audiences spellbound, as she had been aired in two major markets: Chicago and Detoit on cable TV. I had the chance to catch up with this rising star and here is what she had to say.

Pietasters
Wondering how we would pull this off - I was supposed to ask each member of ska heroes the Pietasters a couple of questions, and there were SEVEN guys to talk to - frontman Steve Jackson brilliantly came up with passing the cell phone around. Quisling, Erik (Erik Quisling) and Williams, Austin (Austin, Williams)
It seems that my damn Master’s Degree in counseling makes me susceptible to anyone who looks at the world sociologically, and Straight Whisky dares to equate events on the Sunset Strip, events in rock 'n roll, with larger culture issues. Rockett, Rikki (Rikki Rockett) of Poison
It was a predictably sweltering August afternoon when the phone rang. After a minor misunderstanding, I was able to talk to Dave Shapiro, drummer of Count The Stars, the up-and-coming rockers out of Albany, NY a week after they released their debut full-length on Victory Records. Talking over the phone, since he and the band are busy touring and promoting Never Be Taken Alive, we discussed the new record, why New York is spawning so many successful bands, what it will be like taking part in the now-legendary traveling circus of punk bands that is the Warped Tour, and if, like some other bands, he cowers at the thought of being called (gulp) "emo."

Socialburn Interview

Socialburn's music has just enough of a grunge edge to it that it immediately grabs my 30-something Nirvana/Mother Love Bone/Soundgarden era ear and then proceeds to please me further by bringing something newer to the mix, mainly, a modern, crunchier, thicker, more melodic, more double-aught feel to it.

The Walkmen
They came from different bands to form The Walkmen, and just recently the New York five-some has released their new album Bows and Arrows. Publicity, touring, and the recognition are a few things that have come to be expected from a successful band. And although many performers are profoundly affected by these things, I found these seasoned performers have retained one very important quality: a sense of humor.

TV Smith
Well, attending Viva Le Punk, the three-day fest at CBGBs in early October, proved to be a great experience - not only because of the chance to witness a multitude of great punk bands from all different eras perform, but also because of the people we met. One interesting person I never in a million years thought I'd get the chance to speak with was TV Smith, present-day solo artist and back during the punk explosion in the U.K. in the mid- to late-'70s, frontman of one of the finest acts to come out of that era - The Adverts.

Vanilla Ice
What twenty-something wouldn't piss their pants at the chance to have a conversation with THE musical icon of 1990, Mr. Vanilla Ice? Since selling 17 million copies of To The Extreme, he has released three largely-ignored albums and essentially dropped off the musical radar.
