Aireline - Ocean Songs from the Year of the Horse

by Sally
December 2003

Hailing from the great music city of Nashville, Aireline disregards all stereotypical aspects of Tennessee music. Without a hint of country twang, Mason Frenzel, Chris McMurtry, Matt Mosley and James Foutch managed to pull together the sounds of John Mayer, Radiohead and a little touch of Oasis to form a brilliant Southern rock band.

Ocean Songs from the Year of the Horse, Aireline's debut album, is a magnificent display of poetry sung to melodic alternative rock. Into the musical tones of the standard mix of guitar, bass, drums and percussion Aireline incorporates piano and keyboard aspects that give a pipe organ feel in songs such as "Rest your Bones".

From the first song to the last, Ocean Songs from the Year of the Horse will continue to amaze and impress any listener with the beautifully poetic lyrics. The song titles alone, from "How I Spent my Time in the City" to "The Ghosts Below", demonstrate the band's thought-provoking writing sense. Choosing just one example of Aireline's clever writing abilities is so hard when every single lyric throughout the entire album flows like a modern-day Shakespearean sonnet. "There's a flame in the night / But is it for real this time? / And the waves are lost from sight / So will we set sail tonight? / The wind is breathing a sigh / Answering 'No, that's not for you.'" is just a touch upon the many lyrical descriptions, similes and personifications that epitomize Aireline's style.

Though Ocean Songs from the Year of the Horse will never be heard at the hoppin' dance club in the middle of the city, it will certainly make for the perfect ambiance at the local chill coffee house.
