Indicia
- Identifying Marks

This one is just about out of my grasp. Not completely, but as close as
any music has ever been … I have been writing about music for a long time
and this one...I don't know.
I mean, I understand electronic music. I guess there might even be some
good stuff out there that falls into this genre. Indicia, though, I am
completely unsure of.
The more I listen to it, the more I think I like it, but then it quickly
becomes monotonous again and I am back to square one which, was, do I
really like this?
Betsy Ullery's vocals have a sexy, breathy quality that coaxes the
listener into the safety of the speaker where her lyrics slide over and
into your auditory canal (think Kate Bush singing the soundtrack to a
Michael Bay film). There is something sexy layered in between the pulsing
beats and snaps and pops. Sometimes you have to work a little harder
than should be necessary to hear it.
David Ward is responsible for programming those sounds and playing
keyboards. His soundscapes have a haunting quality one minute and then a
flatulent basso the next. Ward seems to know his way around the FX
machine - so much so that it might be a little overwhelming at times.
The main thing Ward is missing is a clear sense of variance. While
electronic music is not known for being a varied genre, when you are
selling a disc with 11 songs, it would be nice if they didn't all
sound almost exactly alike.
Maybe I'm being too finicky. It is, after all, electronic music. The
bland, repetitive blips and beeps might be all you're asking for in your
electronic music. If that is the case, Indicia delivers.
