Marjorie Fair – Self Help Serenade |
| Location | LA (Though the lead singer was born in Dirty Jerzey!)
|
| Initial Impression | Nearly too depressing to go on. The first few songs
are moody, melancholy, miserable - you get the idea. Lucky for them I was
listening to them on the way to work and was too lazy to switch CDs.
|
| Notable Lyric | "He lives in a halfway house/His mother doesn't tie his
bootstraps down/They found him by the highway side/With bloodstained boots and glass in
his eye" ("Halfway House")
|
| Factoid | Among other wild tour bus antics, lead singer Evan taught
bassist Scott how to sew. Simmer down, boys, you're gonna burn out way
too young at this rate.
|
| Serve With | Coldplay, Radiohead - but make sure you're serving it up at
some sort of hip mingle-party where the conversation is much more
stimulating than the music.
|
| Comments | Not horrible overall, but kind of a downer if you want to
start the day in a good mood. The lyrics are kind of repetitive - I was
able to sing along on the first listen through. But the melodies are
lush and layered… kind of reminiscent of later Beatles, believe it or not.
