Marjorie Fair – Self Help Serenade
LocationLA (Though the lead singer was born in Dirty Jerzey!)
Initial ImpressionNearly too depressing to go on. The first few songs are moody, melancholy, miserable - you get the idea. Lucky for them I was listening to them on the way to work and was too lazy to switch CDs.
Notable Lyric"He lives in a halfway house/His mother doesn't tie his bootstraps down/They found him by the highway side/With bloodstained boots and glass in his eye" ("Halfway House")
FactoidAmong other wild tour bus antics, lead singer Evan taught bassist Scott how to sew. Simmer down, boys, you're gonna burn out way too young at this rate.
Serve WithColdplay, Radiohead - but make sure you're serving it up at some sort of hip mingle-party where the conversation is much more stimulating than the music.
CommentsNot horrible overall, but kind of a downer if you want to start the day in a good mood. The lyrics are kind of repetitive - I was able to sing along on the first listen through. But the melodies are lush and layered… kind of reminiscent of later Beatles, believe it or not.
