![]() | Sam D'Angelo - Nothing Left But Hope | |
| Location | Dayton, Ohio | |
| Initial Impression | The cover has a structure that immediately reminded me of The Power House in the Cleveland Flats. | |
| Notable Lyric | "I appear to be normal, but I'm only a freak. And I am isolation. And I am separation. And I am disassociation. And I am Dis-Integration." - "Dis-Integration" | |
| Factoid | D'Angelo founded Sister Ray, a band from the mid-80s era known for several singles off of four albums. | |
| Serve With | A blanket on the lawn of your favorite outdoor venue. | |
| Comments | I was originally pulled to this CD based on the comparisons to Velvet Underground and John Lennon (Plastic Ono Band-era). Though I only saw rare moments of either, what I did find was a very interesting vocal, used to display raw emotion, rhythm and storyline, all the while lending itself a focal point for the music. "(Another) Disconnection" with its distorted vocals leans far too into the trendy (read: The Strokes and The Vines), though D'Angelo does carry the sound off in a much better display. The remainder of the CD is covered in a more soothing, acoustic, melancholy feel, with the haunting Lennon-esque "All Gone" and the melodic "The Running Song". Glimmers of the upbeat is found on "Dis-Integration" which takes D'Angelo into pop-friendly territory (regardless of somber lyrics). If you're a fan of singer-songwriters you'll want to check this one out. | |
