![]() | Robert Jackson - Personal Jesus | |
| Location | New York | |
| Initial Impression | My initial thought was "tell me someone didn't remake "Personal Jesus" (Depeche Mode)". Thankfully it's a completely different song, and one that I'm fairly certain will not be demoralized into a wedding dance song anytime in the near future. | |
| Notable Lyric | "They'll be no confessionals and lots of popped cherries" from "Personal Jesus". | |
| Factoid | "Personal Jesus" features Jon Gordon and Frank Villardi from Suzanne Vega's band. | |
| Serve With | The movie "Dogma". | |
| Comments | Robert Jackson mixes various incarnations of rock, alternative, and punk throughout this offering, which holds definite promise. "Personal Jesus" starts out with a Stones feel and 80s new wave vocal as "Knockin' on the Door" leaves one with a more melodic groove, mixing in strong vocal harmonies and 80s ballad guitar riff. "Dead Yuppies on the Highway" is the Robert Jackson punk track that won me over based on title alone. Toss in the organ and surfer guitar and find myself singing along "Oh yeah baby! Dead Yuppies." "Jamie Says" again brings forth an old Stones groove circa "Mother's Little Helper" while "Gun Fire in the Distance" had a Foreigner feel but for somewhat forced lyrics which are also present on "Dreams That Can't be Found". "Blood on Their Hands" has a Metallica-like intro leaving an expectation of trashing metal to follow but pulls in a more 70s guitar and percussion. "You Don't Care No More" brings in the metal vibe missing on the previous track but with a punk edge as "Alice Linz" and "Dreams That Can't Be Found" are reminiscent of 80s new wave with moments of a Bryan Ferry-esque vocal. | |
