Burgess Shale - It's Never Enough, Is It?
LocationN/A
Initial Impression It sure looks like a cool CD.
Notable Lyric"I don't think it can get much better, take my Paxil, take my sweater" " - "Stupidity"
FactoidBurgess Shale takes their name from a 500 million-year-old fossil site. Is it social commentary about mankind's treatment of our wild fuzzy friends, or just a catchy name?
Serve WithNight of the Living Dead – dark and creepy, with an army of zombies moaning in monotone.
Comments The expression of social views through lyrics has always been a key element in modern songwriting. Of course, artists are expected to make good music while expressing those views. The lyrics on It's Never Enough, Is It? are clever, witty, and clearly outline SoCal-based Burgess Shale's stance on a slew of current issues. Unfortunately those clever, witty lyrics are lost under repetitive, monotonous rhyme schemes and glaring, abrasive vocals. The vocal and instrumental tracks on this CD sound like they were recorded for different albums; neither one complements the other, and the message gets lost in the resulting mess. Being the eternal optimist, I had hoped to find at least one gem on this CD – the moody, electronica-esque instrumentals showed mountains of promise – but I had to give up somewhere around track 12. Seventeen nearly identical tracks on a 70-plus minute CD are too much to suffer through in one sitting.
