A Quickie with Snapcase's Daryl Taberski
Janelle: What is your definition of 'happiness'?
- Daryl: I guess happiness to me is a balance of being able to have the time to enjoy the simple things in life like, for example going on long walks with my wife and my dog, but at the same time having something that's kind of pushing me to work on a daily level, for example like the band. So, not
like I have nothing to do except chill out and go on walks. I have time to do that when I'm home. I have something over my head that's kind of like making me think, oh, I have to get this done or I gotta get that done.
Janelle: Do you have any guilty pleasures?
Daryl: Yeah, lots of them. One thing is I'm way too addicted to sports. I'm a little better now than I was, but, like, I don't know, if sports pop up on the television I have a hard time pulling myself away, whether it's basketball or football. Certain sports, like baseball playoffs or hockey, I only watch
the playoffs. I can watch a basketball game any time. I love basketball. Football I love. I'll even watch sports that are just kind of like not major sports-sports just out of interest, like...curling, you know?
Just to see how the game progresses and I get really interested in competition, I guess and stuff like that. And then there's a lot of music I guess that I have guilty pleasures like Lynyrd Skynyrd. I like a lot of,
like, R&B music. I only like it for a week or two-the songs. I find myself when I drive in my car, rather than listen to CDs or rock radio, I find myself listening to Jennifer Lopez stuff. It just seems to be less of a headache to me for some reason. I don't know, I'd much rather listen to a station like that-Jennifer Lopez and Missy Eliot and all that stuff-rather than like, have to deal with, like, sitting through Creed and Nickelback. I can't put up with that stuff.
Janelle: Yeah, I know it. Who would play you in the film of your life?
Daryl: (Laughter) It's funny 'cause one time we discussed if there was a movie about the band and the roadies, who would play everyone. It was kind of funny to come up with actors for everyone. And I didn't choose this actor, but everyone said that Lou Diamond Phillips would be me. I don't know why. It depends. In the summer when I'm tan, then it makes more sense.
Janelle: All right. Tell us about your first kiss.
Daryl: First kiss? Um, well I remember being in like first or second grade and having this girl that was a lot bigger than me pushing me around, and I really-the last thing in the world I wanted was for her to kiss me. But, I don't know, I think she caught me and kissed me. I don't know if that counts, but...
Janelle: Ok, but that's not a good memory!
Daryl: My first intended kiss, was a junior high school dance, I think I was in seventh grade and I was sitting up in the bleachers with this girl and we had our arms around each other and we were sitting there for like half an hour and then I decided to kiss her and she pushed me away. And so she
said her sister told her to say "no." So that was in seventh grade, I think.
Janelle: Ok and finally, who is your favorite band that no one has heard of?-Or R&B artist-whatever.
Daryl: Um, I'm trying to think. Let's see. Well, there's this band that everyone in our band likes called Houston. Nobody's really heard of them. They're basically putting out records on their own and they're from Minnesota. They're friends of our bass player. Hopefully they'll get signed by some label soon and we'll hear more about them. I really like-lots of people have heard of them, but to me not enough-Modest Mouse. Have you ever listened to them?
Janelle: No, I've heard of them, but never...
Daryl: Yeah, they're like one of my favorite groups. They don't seem to get enough recognition, and there's one record in particular that's-well, actually there's two-there's one called The Lonesome Crowded West and the other one is The Moon and Antarctica. That's the really good one.
