Murdocks - Surrenderender
LocationAustin, TX
Initial ImpressionMurdocks call "the most underprivileged district of [Austin], one that's characterized by poverty, prostitution, a high crime rate, and graffiti-covered abandoned buildings," their stomping ground. They gotta be tough. My kinda people.
Notable Lyric"Daddy had a dollar when he bought the farm and now it's gonna save mom and me/He worked so hard his entire life, now he ain't but a memory."
FactoidThis trio's previous release, a self-titled EP, was recorded for a mere 300 dollars.
Serve WithNew York garage-y type bands like The Realistics and Some Action.
CommentsTrue on this, their debut LP, Murdocks prove they're more than adept at kicking out the absolutely hyper and raw jams with rowdy rockers like "Saddest Star"; the punked-out, brash, out-of-control "Horsegore" (the best song of the album); and the raucous and frantic "Bloody Murder" to name a few. And though these songs are great and the three-piece play the style well, they mix things up nicely, as they are also capable of turning the unbridled energy down a notch with lighter, mellower fare like the subtle "Dance the Vomit Shakes"; the affecting gem "Get Your Guns" and the equally-moving slow crooner "Title Track"; the dark and brooding "My Scarlet Purpose"; and the final offering, "Easter Moon", hands-down the most understated of the 11 tracks, as it's just vocals over acoustic guitar. The only song that doesn't sit well with this reviewer is "Da Da", an annoying song that was actually released on a split-7" and for which the band made a video. Hey, whatever... Other than this misstep, not a bad outing at all.
