| Initial Impression | I had interviewed the drummer, Darren, prior to writing this review, so I had much information about the band and record (and, yes, obviously I heard the record) before tackling this review. | |
| Notable Lyric | "The blind lead the blind, treading round in circles, waiting to achieve/Distorted, contorted, misshapen views that you try to teach me but you fall short." | |
| Factoid | "The Hurt Process will be playing the Warped Tour this summer - something not done by many English bands at all. Though the press release claims they're the first band to do so, it's not true; we mustn't forget The (mighty) Damned played it previously. Still, it's an awesome accomplishment. | |
| Serve With | Hmmm...their sound is all over the place, so bipolar medication? | |
| Comments | This six-piece gets a lot of their punch from the dual vocal assault of Daniel and Mark that oscillate between clean and screamed styles atop a fresh brand of melodic hardcore provided by bassist Duncan, guitarists Alun and Tom, and drummer Darren. Honestly, if I hadn't known they were from the U.K., I would've thought they were an American band, but of course, that is largely due to the emotional hardcore they play, a primarily American phenomenon. Some songs are downright heavy throughout like "Opinion" and "Come Home", whereas others alternate between an upbeat, energetic feel and more placid tones like the opener "This Piece". Meanwhile, some, such as "White Butterflies", have light and airy parts that build up powerfully when some real hard parts are mixed in, and still others, like "Clarity", are predominantly slow and tranquil, but no matter what elements are included in the compositions, all 10 are filled with passion. | |
