The Locust - Safety Second, Body Last |
| Location | San Diego |
| Initial Impression | More sonic chaos from these madmen. ...Or is it?! The one-sheet says this is the band's "most structured run through space yet." What gives? Wait, and it says this release is "the most accessible" of their catalogue too. |
| Notable Lyric | "Dear fools and barbarians why don't you ask yourself if you can still recall the Alamo in this botched blitzkrieg of drive-through culture and sweaty cadaver-driven vessels." |
| Factoid | The Locust have integrity, boycotting "Clear Channel shows no matter how incredible the line-up." |
| Serve With | Experimental hardcore punk/noise-rock. |
| Comments | Yes, this is an EP by THE LOCUST, consisting of TWO songs lasting a bit over 10 MINUTES. What? you may be asking. And rightly so. Their first full-length comprised 20 songs and was 13 minutes long and their last album, 2003's Plague Soundscapes was, what, 20 minutes long and 23 tracks? Okay, well, looks can be deceiving. (Keeping in tune with the clever, oddball titles) Safety Second, Body Last is actually more than meets the eye, as it's actually five movements – yes, as in symphonic composition. The Locust, never ones to stick to tradition by any means, are dabbling in the classical, but sounding nothing like it. We've got insanely chaotic hardcore punk here with much electronic overtones throughout and The Locust's trademark sense of paranoia and immediacy intact, as well as massive time changes (from super-fast to somewhat sludgy), unexpected twists, and thought-provoking lyrics. Pretty cool. Still wouldn't say it's "accessible," per se, but definitely a nice mindfuck, if you're in the mood. |
