I was able to attend the 89.X Blowout in Detroit and caught Mango Pie's performance. Mango Pie is one of the top 10 bands posted on www.barstar.com and a treat to catch.

Vocalist John Lollio was in top form and his ability to get audience participation to raise their drinks along to his anecdotes, was able to set the tone for what was to be a fun and high spirited evening.

Guitarist Keith Holstein was in top form with his riffs and truly is a musician who has his chops and displays great technique, and the entire group display a heavy approach, along with precision. This band truly know how to entertain as well as get the audience into the mood of the show.

Here is a brief synopsis of the show:

The show was well received and the audience was able to get into the spirit of the show, along with John's ability to set the tone for a musical hard rockin evening. The feel of Keith's Holstein's riffs and the heavy sound made the show a hard rocking, yet fun filled show. The audience was able to get into the tempo set for a fun-filled evening.

"Morphine," showed innovative style, and a well-flowing progression from the lyrics, chorus and displayed great musical techique.

Twisted," emoted feel and instrospection, along with a driving beat. It flowed well, carrying a steady rhythm, along with feel and energy. Brian Larson and Joe Poore, the rhythm section, succeeded in keeping the beat and tone to carry the song with great precision.

My Personal pick from the first CD, "Secret Admirer" was next. This song is haunting, yet carries a meldodic and heavy feel. THe lyrical content is well-delivered and carries a straight-forward delivery.

The next song was the band's metal version of "Oscar Meyer." The audience recieved it well and the crowd was fired up and full of spirit.

"The Fall," a ballad, was delivered with soul and great harmony. The lyrics convered great depth and conveyed a powerful approach and tone.

"Poet Eyes," held a steady bass line and what followed was a blistering guitar carried with technique and skill. Subtle, yet steady, thing song was packed with energy.

The last song of the set, "Victim" is a rap/metal social commentary about the fight to beat the odds and not to become a statistic. Very to the point and had a funky and strong delivery.
