Benna - What’s Meant to Be
LocationNew York City
Initial ImpressionWe think we might all use the same brand of hair color.
Notable Lyric“Sirens and footsteps flogging the corners, banging my head out of tune,” from ‘Bloody Red’. Okay, we admit, we chose this cuz it contained the word Sirens!
FactoidIra Elliot from Nada Surf and Paul Garisto (Psychedelic Furs, Iggy Pop, Bree Sharp) laid drum tracks for this album. Plus, Jeff Nelson, who played drums for Minor Threat runs Adult Swim, the label releasing this album.
Serve WithJack Daniels – cuz that’s what's in our cups.
CommentsAt first we heard glimpses of Suzanne Vega on “All-Star” (until Benna rocked out, that is). Then “Half a Girl” brought up comparisons of Jill Sobule and Aimee Mann, with a psychedelic edge. Truth be told, we’re also hearing Sixpence None the Richer and Letters to Cleo on “Stay in Luv”, and Juliana Hatfield on “The One For You”. Have we given you enough comparisons yet, dammit? One more – we finally got the Beatles’ reference on “Simple Days”, due to the “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds” keyboard thing in the background.
