| Comments | Definitely a different direction from the bouncy ska-punk of Five Iron Frenzy (remember their great debut Upbeats and Beatdowns?). Calling this band's style "astro-rock," Roper, along with guitarist Dennis Culp, bassist Keith Hoerig, and drummer Andrew Verdecchio, play highly emotional, poppy, eclectic alternative rock, utilizing samples, keyboards, and strings. As Roper claims, "Lyrically this is definitely the dark side of Five Iron Frenzy" with "songs about struggling with the world and tragedy." The tortured "Titan," which is quite possibly the best offering, has a dark, complex, conflicted feel to it, while "Anastasia" is heartfelt and lovelorn and the fragile acoustic "Estrella" is touching. The finale, "Daylight," is emotive as all hell, ending with heart-wrenching screamed vocals. The disc is interspersed with tracks featuring Mission Control snippets atop spacey music, as on "Mercury," "Gemini," and in the middle of "Daylight." | |
