Electric Turn To Me - Four-Song EP

by Janelle
June 2003

The fusion of overwhelming organs and keyboard bass, vital guitars, clockwork drumming, and female vocals that are like an amalgam of the Lunachicks' Theo, Siouxsie, Vice Squad's Beki Bondage, and Karen O. - mainly because of the distortion factor - Electric Turn To Me play a creative electro/goth/punk hybrid that's a welcome change when considering all the bands around that sound alike.

I mean who else is recording songs with a heavy Damned circa "These Hands" circus nightmare-rock as on ETTM's powerhouse of an opener "First Crimes?" (But of course not nearly as frightening…) Even the "poppier" more sedate offering "Nightvision," on which frontwoman Silke exposes her more vulnerable side with longing vocals and the band showcasing a more "sunny" sound is not cloying. It's still a slightly dark offering, with lyrics like "What are you waiting for?/ Are you looking for me?/ Do you know that I know who you are?/ You are my nightmare and my sweetest dream/ You're one of the midnight angels" enmeshed in intricate guitars. This is the song that's most easy on the ears, ending with light guitars.

The three other tracks see Silke, along with drummer Blake Fleming, guitarist James Wilk, and Marcus DeGrazia on keyboards and organs, on the more riotous side. The fourth and final track "Ride the Wave" is the most upbeat track and is undeniably catchy. This is the dance track, my friends. Just try to sit still through it. However, the standout track has to be the foreboding first track, the aforementioned "First Crimes." The vocals are simply amazing, going form tough and powerful to ominous crooning, as Silke articulates, "No longer can you hear your own screams." And amidst the barrage of noise produced by the band, that's probably true. The organs add so much texture -sinfully synth-full, if you will - as the crashing drums carry the song along. It's great how the track ends as well, with Silke's vocals layered with male whispers counting down, and they both finish in a synchronized fashion. This is just a creative, inventive EP.
