The Cardinal Sin is a four-piece rock band from the Minneapolis area, currently touring the western states in support of their album on Grey Flight Records entitled Oil and Water. The band consists of Rebecca Hanten on drums, Jon Ness on bass, James Russell on guitar and vocals, and Mark Shaw on guitar.

I went to see this band on the spur of the moment after my daughter asked me to go. While the music is not my usual style, (my daughter described it as Emo to Screamo) I was pleasantly surprised to hear a band that that could _really_ rock. Most of the bands I have heard that play this type of music try hard to be very intense but end up just coming across as frantic. The Cardinal Sin did it right by having tight arrangements and focusing on playing like stars rather than the vain rock posturing that seems so common. Having played drums for 40 years (Yes, I’m a certified Old Fart) I was especially pleased to hear Hanten's work. Her playing was fluid and graceful and complemented the songs with a musicality that reminded me of the late Keith Moon of The Who. Her playing coupled with driving guitar and bass rhythms gave the music momentum that was like a loaded freight train on a downhill run. In a word, unstoppable. If they can stay together and continue to progress as musicians I think we will be hearing more from them in the future.
