Mavis - Mavis
Location ?
Initial ImpressionBefore track one: hmm – cheap graphics, paper CD sleeve; looks like another amateur submission…after track 1: dammit, I gotta quit judging books by their covers…
Notable Lyric"We'd laugh and we'd sing, play chess with kings, drink our wine with Cheshire Cat/In clouds we bathe, behave like children who could care less where they're at" – "Only in My Dreams"; "I carve your name in everything with my pocketknife." - "The Way You Do"
FactoidMavis, a.k.a. Chris Joyner, has taken the role of a keyboard player for the last decade, playing with Sheryl Crow, Soul Asylum, Semisonic, and even subbing for Rami in the Wallflowers.
Serve WithClear, candlelit night with an ocean view and the good bottle of wine you've been saving.
CommentsMavis has a gift for placing clever, introspective lyrics over a background of enchanting harmonies in a way that has me begging for more than the four tracks on this pre-release CD. His relaxed, breathy vocal delivery keeps the songs light and free – this keyboardist-turned-vocalist lets his words ebb and flow with the instruments in a way that ties every note together to tell moving, yet understated stories. Finding music like this is the reason why I write reviews. When Mavis' debut album, to be released on Trampoline Records, hits shelves some time in the near future, I will be the guy pushing you out of the way to get my hands on a copy.
