| Initial Impression | Before track one: hmm – cheap graphics, paper CD sleeve; looks like another amateur submission…after track 1: dammit, I gotta quit judging books by their covers… | |
| Notable Lyric | "We'd laugh and we'd sing, play chess with kings, drink our wine with Cheshire Cat/In clouds we bathe, behave like children who could care less where they're at" – "Only in My Dreams"; "I carve your name in everything with my pocketknife." - "The Way You Do" | |
| Factoid | Mavis, a.k.a. Chris Joyner, has taken the role of a keyboard player for the last decade, playing with Sheryl Crow, Soul Asylum, Semisonic, and even subbing for Rami in the Wallflowers. | |
| Serve With | Clear, candlelit night with an ocean view and the good bottle of wine you've been saving. | |
| Comments | Mavis has a gift for placing clever, introspective lyrics over a background of enchanting harmonies in a way that has me begging for more than the four tracks on this pre-release CD. His relaxed, breathy vocal delivery keeps the songs light and free – this keyboardist-turned-vocalist lets his words ebb and flow with the instruments in a way that ties every note together to tell moving, yet understated stories. Finding music like this is the reason why I write reviews. When Mavis' debut album, to be released on Trampoline Records, hits shelves some time in the near future, I will be the guy pushing you out of the way to get my hands on a copy. | |
