| Comments | Albums like this make me damn proud to be a woman (they also make me want to congratulate Aston’s wife for her good choice). Instead of sappy angsty non-specific love songs, Michael has crafted a series of moody odes to female courage and dedication. Like “Jenin”, inspired by 23 year-old American Rachel Corey who was run over while trying to stop an Israeli bulldozer from razing a family home. Welsh-born, Ashton launches into a full-on examination of the blind patriotism of Americans during this latest conflict in “Downhill Both Ways”, and explores the sacrifices of women during war in “Two Hungry Women” and the title track. Gene Loves Jezebel has undergone many shifts over their twenty-one years, but as Aston states, their intent was always to make confrontational music. With Exploding Girls he succeeds again. | |
