| Comments | There is a current trend in music in which record companies and PR
people like to attach the term "garage rock" to anything that is not
metal, jazz, or country in hopes of moving a few extra units. Several
recent rock, punk, alternative, and glam bands have all been victimized
by this false advertising. Touted as "trashy, guitar-driven
garage-rock," and "gritty," L.A.'s Bangkok Five do not even come close
to living up to those labels. 10 The Hard Way is too polished
and way too produced to have come out of a garage - unless the garage in
question has a state-of-the-art studio built in it. That is not too say
that the CD is garbage, though. The EP does start out rocking with "Black
Noise", and the songs are quite catchy, albeit a little
paint-by-numbers. "Dead Lights" has a big sing-along chorus, but
that is exactly what will turn off garage rock purists who listen to
bands like Thee Headcoats or The Mighty Caesars. If you are looking for
a modern rock band with some bounce, then the Bangkok Five might be for
you. If you are looking for trashy guitars and tastefully hard drum
fills, you are going to have to look elsewhere. On the bright side,
there have not been too many "garage hip-hop" sightings… yet.
