Funeral For A Friend Hours

by Gnarly Charlie
September 2005

A record that gets better with every listen, Hours is sure to catch many an ear. Funeral for a Friend really shine on this one, combining solid metallic riffs, bruising rhythms, and soaring melodies. And there is real singing, sans the raspy, pharyngeal overload or Cookie Monster vocals, if you will. The somewhat dark lyrics have depth and weight, touching on love, obsession, fear, and rage along with despairing heartache. The instrumentation meshes brilliantly with the words, and are anything but sluggish, taking a sad song and making it better, viciously.

Funeral for a Friend has a sound that is like a musical mixture of Third Eye Blind (but with a lot more sack), Shadows Fall, and The Killers, to name a few. Three of the best songs on Hours are "Recovery", "The End of Nothing", and "Alvarez", which run as tracks eight, nine, and 10, respectively.

Hours is a fine offering from five young blokes who know how to rock with power and style. It will be interesting to see where the guys from Funeral for a Friend go with their talent. They might have great taste, or guts, naming their band after one of the best songs ever written.
