Decent Xposure, Volume One compilation
LocationEast of the Mississippi
Initial ImpressionI’m digging on these cardboard CD sleeves. We may have to use these for our next compilation.
Notable Lyric“Just because you’re pretty doesn’t make you dumb” from Washington D.C’s The Low Life’s “In My Bed.” And “Don’t you know you are my favorite addiction” from Pittsburgh’s Good Brother Earl.
FactoidThree artists call Ohio home, making it the only state on this CD represented more than once. Too bad the folks who put this project together didn’t think to partner with us instead of another smaller zine who has no reader base in the region at all.
Serve WithA sampler meal.
CommentsAlthough enjoyable and more than competent, Ari Hest and Pete Schmidt seem to suffer from the Dave Matthews Band overload so prevalent right now. The Low Life is saved from this denotation by a slight reggae influence, heartfelt funk and slightly naughty vocals while Good Brother Earl buoys the spirit with a folksy influence, almost bordering on way old-school country ala Patsy Cline and the original Hank Williams. I’ve already praised Julius Bragg and Brendan Breen in other reviews, so I’ll give my affection to Columbus, Ohio’s Ordinary Peoples with their great back to basics hip-hop and socially relevant “A World Without Money”. Truthfully, the most important purpose for compilations like this are to remind us once again how much great music is being played in clubs across the country every weekend. Once you listen to this disc, you’ll be motivated to find it.
