The Kamikaze Hearts - The Kamikaze Hearts

by Kate Westrich
October 2003

The men of The Kamikaze Hearts have several things going for them on their self-titled album. The album’s quirky cover photo is eye-catching, the lyrics range from touching to biting and the music is no less that average. Taking away from any positives of the album is the mediocre sound quality on the album, which in addition to tainting the music quality also disguises any hint of harmony between the men’s voices.

This four-piece band from Albany, New York, experiments with different types of music on this album from poppy, bluesy and bluegrassy. Few songs get very upbeat, dwelling instead on how you “Know I’m the asshole” and how “I’m just about to lose myself again.”

A possible stand out on this album is “Fall,” a la They Might be Giants. In general though, The Kamikaze Hearts fail by not producing any songs that stand out from what you’ll hear in just about every bar in every college town you’ll ever go to.
