Under The Volcano - Nesconset, NY

by Jeanne
Issue 65

Brought to you by a brash clan of presumably young men from Long Island, Under The Volcano is a punk/hardcore fans wet dream. Distributed across New England by such heavyweights as Tower Records, Virgin Records, Borders, and Newbury Comics, UTV maintains a decidedly underground edge and feel, while clearly seeking to reach the masses.

Textually-speaking, UTV is straight-forward and honest with a sarcastic grit. Interviews in this issue feature questions that make reference to the Donner Party (quite crafty, if you ask me), interrogate band's moods (happy, depressed, joyous), and ask generally thought-provoking questions that are to the heart of a particular artist. When one interviewer dares to admit he's a fan of "Wango Tango", I must give full applause to UTV for it's no-holds-barred attitude; which, of course, we can attribute back to the punk scene they cover.

While some of the articles are laid-out in bizarre fonts that strain my aging vision, UTV is fun and intelligent; it gives credit to fans of punk, and dares not assume that its readers are on a low-brow level. What's more for this little magazine with a moshpit-sized punch? UTV is FREE...and you gotta love that price tag. Indeed.
